iGizmoz, from the developer of Photogene, is a very sweet widget application. If you have been around the jailbreak scene you have probably tried your hand at a few Widget apps only to end up feeling disappointed. iGizmoz brings Widgets to the App Store and believe me, you will not be disappointed. This is what widgets were meant to be like!
iGizmoz comes with 11 working widgets that are customizable:
- World clock
- Sticky notes
- Calendar
- Search tool
- Speed dial
- Countdown
- Stopwatch
- Slideshow
- Swinging creature
- Tic tac toe game
- Flashlight
The widgets can be freely arranged on the scrollable screen. Once a widget has been added to the main screen, it can be double tapped and customized. You can also change the background image of the main screen choosing from the images provided or choosing an image from your Photo Library.
Below is how each widget works and how it can be customized.
World Clock: The World Clock displays the current time for a specific time zone. You can choose from six clock styles and from a complete list of time zines. You can also choose to turn on/off the seconds hand. The nice thing about this widget is that you can add more than one allowing one to display your current time zone and another to display an alternative time zone.
Sticky Notes: Skicky Notes are little notes that display short messages. Just tap on the note to add a message. Double tapping on the note allows you to choose from ten different note styles.
Calendar: The Calendar widget displays the current month with the current date being highlighted in blue. You can scroll through previous and upcoming months using the arrows on either side of the Month. This is the only widget that is not customizable.
Search Tool: The Search Tool widget allows you to quickly search without taking you out of iGizmoz. You can choose to have the widget search Google, Google Images, Yahoo, Wikipedia or Merriam Webster Dictionary. You can also choose whether you would like the search history showed or not.
Speed Dial: The Speed Dial widget allows you to quickly call or text a contact. You are able to create a Speed Dial widget for anyone in your Contact List. You can then choose whether you would like the widget will call or text the person. It will automatically pull in the image you have assigned to that Contact. Double tap on the image part of the widget to call/text… double tap the bottom of the widget to get into the settings for the widget. Note: Using this widget will take you out of iGizmoz.
Countdown: The Countdown widget displays a running countdown of number of days until a specific event. This widget comes with two countdown styles. It allows you to choose your own event or choose from a list of pre-selected events. You also turn on/off an Hours display.
Stopwatch: The Stopwatch widget displays a running timer. In the settings for this widget, you can choose it have it display as a countdown time.. counting down from a specified amount of time or as Stopper which allows you to start the widget timer and then stop it and start it again if necessary (similar to a stopwatch).
Slideshow: Slideshow is a widget that displays a slideshow of images from your Photo Library. This widget allows you to choose images from your Photo Library, select a transition style from the four provided and customize the speed of the slideshow.
Flashlight: Flashlight is a light widget that allows the screen to become a “flashlight.” There are four flashlight colors available; white, yellow, red and blue. Just tap the string on the light and watch your your screen illuminate… tap the string again to turn off the light.
Tic Tac Toe Game: This is your basic game of Tic Tac Toe… play the game right in the widget. You can choose to play against the computer or 2 player as well as choose between two difficult mods.
Swinging Creature: The Swinging Creature widget will swing and sway as you tilt your iPhone. A fun little widget that allows you to choose from four creatures.
That is a basic overview of the widgets. I had absolutely no issues customizing or using any of the widgets. The entire application is extrememly smooth and exquisitely designed. iGizmoz is most definitely worth the $0.99 price tag if not only just to experience widgets at their best! How to Use iGizmoz:
The first time you open iGizmoz there will be two widgets already on the screen; a clock and a stick note. You can get to more widgets, edit widgets, rearrange the widgets and get into the app’s settings by tapping on the button in the bottom left of the screen.
You can add more widgets by tapping, holding and dragging them from the lower menu bar onto the screen. They can then be freely moved around to wherever you would like them on the screen. If you tap on the Settings icon above a widget, it can be customized while in “edit” mode. Tapping on the X above a widget will remove it from the screen. You can add more than one of the same widget.
On the left menu bar are a few options including the app’s Settings which allow you to change the background image and reset iGizmoz. The option below the Settings option will arrange the widgets in straight rows or allow you to place freely on the screen. Once you have the widgets arranged to your liking, you can select the X in the left menu bar to get back to the main screen.

Borrowing a page from the Twitter handbook, Google Wave has just introduced the concept of “following” and “unfollowing.” The feature applies to public Waves, which, as the name suggests, are Waves that anyone can see.
Here’s how it works according to Google: “When you see a public wave that you would like to get updates on, you can chose to follow it by hitting the follow button in the wave panel toolbar. You can remove these waves from your inbox by hitting the “archive” button, but when there is an update they will pop back in. You can switch between following and unfollowing a wave as much and as often as you like.”
Information overload has been one of the early criticisms of Google Wave, so this move makes sense as the team behind it continues to evolve the product. Meanwhile, the potential utility of following Public Waves is intriguing, not completely dissimilar from the idea of following a List on Twitter – find public Waves that you’re interested in, follow them, and get updates as they happen.
Google hints that there’s more to come with the follow concept. “Following is the first step towards a set of new tools for managing waves in your inbox … We’re also thinking of expanding the following concept to let you follow people, groups, and searches,” they write.

One of the core philosophies of Google, and one of the reasons it has been so successful, is efficiency. It’s about both being as efficient as possible when serving search results and processing data and creating product that push the limits of efficiency for the user (as an example, Google’s trying to make communication more efficient with Google Wave).
Maybe that’s why we’re not surprised that Google is finally looking to tackle the underpinning code that runs the web. Today the search giant released Go, an open-source development language that Google believes will combine performance with speed, and one that the company probably hopes will reshape the development and software industries in its favor.
Go is based on the C programming family, one of the most widely used programming language trees in the world. However, the twist is that incorporates elements of Python (a preferred development language within Google) and the Pascal/Modula/Oberon family to make faster and more dynamic programs.
In its Go FAQ, Google explains the main motivations behind the project:
“No major systems language has emerged in over a decade, but over that time the computing landscape has changed tremendously. There are several trends:- Computers are enormously quicker but software development is not faster.
- Dependency management is a big part of software development today but the “header files” of languages in the C tradition are antithetical to clean dependency analysis—and fast compilation.
- There is a growing rebellion against cumbersome type systems like those of Java and C++, pushing people towards dynamically typed languages such as Python and JavaScript.
- Some fundamental concepts such as garbage collection and parallel computation are not well supported by popular systems languages.
- The emergence of multicore computers has generated worry and confusion.”
Summary: Google believes that the web and computing have changed dramatically in the last ten years, but the languages powering that computing have not. But when you get down to it, Google could benefit a great deal from not only having a more efficient programming language, but having one it designed being used in thousands web and software apps.

Late last month Amazon announced they’d be making a version of the Kindle software for the PC as well as the Mac. The Mac version has yet to ship, but the PC version is now available as a free download in over 100 countries.
Kindle for PC joins the Kindle for iPhone app in a push to a more platform-agnostic strategy for the online book giant. No matter which platform you happen to be reading on, Amazon’s Whispersync technology will save and synchronize your stopping place and any bookmarks you’ve created. The idea is to create a seamless reading experience even as you change devices.
You can of course read your purchased titles on the software, as well as browse and purchase new books from the Kindle Store. The PC version also has the added advantage of being able to read in color, which should come in handy for specific types of content including graphic novels and other graphic-intensive titles. Windows 7 users will have the added ability to use finger gestures to enhance the reading experience, including using a finger pinch to zoom in and out and finger swipes to turn pages.
Ars Technica spent some hands-on time with the new software and found some hiccups with the download process that may be due to first day kinks and server overload. They also note you won’t be able to transfer your magazine or blog subscriptions to the PC version of the Kindle software.

In an age where privacy is becoming increasingly hard to come by, the British government is further hastening its demise for citizens in the UK. According to The Telegraph, all internet service providers and telecommunication companies will be legally required to store records of all personal communications for one year.
Moreover, that data will be made available to a wide range of 653 public bodies including police, fire and ambulance services, the Financial Services Authority, prison governors and local councils. Obtaining access to the data won’t even require the permission of a judge; authorization from a senior police official or equivalent department head at a local authority will suffice.
The original plan, named rather ominously the “Intercept Modernisation Programme,” was to create a single government in-house database to compile and store all the data, but widespread opposition and privacy concerns held officials back from that brink. Nevertheless the new legislation, slated to come before Parliament after the next general election, will dramatically increase the amount and types of personal communications data that can be relatively easily obtained. And of course, UK taxpayers will be footing the bill for all that storage, to the tune of £2 billion over the next 10 years.
All of this is, of course, under the guise of fighting terrorism. Shadow home secretary Chris Grayling indicated one of the many problems with the sweeping legislation is the potential for “mission creep,” in which new powers introduced ostensibly for one purpose “end up being used for completely different purposes. We have to stop that from happening.”

If you needed proof that social gaming is huge business, look no further than today’s blockbuster news.
Video gaming giant Electronics Arts (EA for short) just announced that it has acquired the social gaming company Playfish for a deal that could be worth up to $400 million. While there have been rumors of potential acquisition, the deal is now official.
EA will pay $275 million in cash and $25 million in equity for the company. In addition, if Playfish achieves certain “performance milestones” (aka continues to grow), the price tag could go up to a full $400 million.
And there’s no reason to think Playfish won’t continue to rapidly grow along with the social gaming market. The company is responsible for some of the most popular games on Facebook, MySpace, and the iPhone, including Pet Society, Restaurant City, and Country Story.
With EA’s financial and gaming muscle, we could see some amazing synergies on the console and social gaming platforms, as well as greater investment in growth and development in social gaming.

Early September we reported that Demonoid would go down for possibly-extended downtime due to some hardware problems. Two months later the site is still down and nobody seems to know how long the ‘maintenance’ will last. So where should Demonoid users go to now?
When writing this article we were faced with a problem. Technically there isn’t really an alternative to Demonoid, as the site acted both as a private and public tracker with a library of hundreds of thousands of user uploaded torrent files. We have to admit that the sites listed here don’t quite compare to the late Demonoid, but when combined they go someway to filling the gap for those struggling for ideas.
We previously listed 25 Pirate Bay alternatives. Because many of these could also serve as Demonoid replacements we decided not to include any duplicates here, hence the absence of sites such as Mininova, isoHunt and Torrentz. Here are some of the options that Demonoid users have while the site is down.
The Internet is populated with thousands of smaller BitTorrent trackers that require users to signup, mostly through an invite system like Demonoid’s. Luckily for those new to the private tracker phenomenon, there are always a few dozen sites that allow newcomers to join without being invited. We’ve listed 5 of these sites below, more are available at Btracs.
One of the downsides of most (smaller) private trackers is that they don’t offer as many torrents as Demonoid did. Those looking for more obscure or niche content are often better off at one of the public torrent indexes or meta-search engines. We’ve listed 5 lesser known torrent sites below. Although these are perfectly suited to find the latest torrents, we have to admit that their existence relies on other torrent sites like The Pirate Bay and Mininova (where they get torrents from), and public trackers such as OpenBitTorrent and PublicBT.
We understand that this list isn’t complete, we could have mentioned isoHunt’s new project Hexagon and there are many other torrent sites we could have included, but we have a secret weapon – the readers of TorrentFreak – who can list alternative sites by the dozen.
So, in the spirit of sharing, if you know a public or private site which is open for signups that is not already listed here or in our Pirate Bay alternative article, we encourage you to list it in the comment section below.
